Carters lane, Ilkley - The Brief

This project involved the design of a contemporary single-storey rear extension to transform the existing rear of the property into a generous open-plan kitchen, dining, and snug space, creating a strong connection between the home and its surrounding landscape.

Our design approach sought to complement the character of the original dwelling while introducing a clearly modern intervention. A key aspect of the proposal was the introduction of large areas of full-height glazing, including sliding doors and corner glazing, to maximise natural light and provide uninterrupted views to the garden and the beautiful surrounding views. This allows the internal living spaces to open seamlessly onto the external terrace, enhancing indoor–outdoor living and improving the overall quality of the accommodation.

Internally, the new open-plan layout creates a flexible and sociable heart to the home, with clearly defined yet interconnected zones for cooking, dining, and relaxation. The reconfiguration significantly improves circulation, daylight, and the overall functionality of the property and family living requirements.

As an architectural practice, we delivered the project from initial concept design through planning and technical development, ensuring a cohesive design that enhances both the aesthetic and practical performance of the property.
